Viking Message 5.26.24 (2024)

Good Evening Parents, students and staff,

This is Joycelyn Cassidy, principal of WOHS with your Viking Message for the week of May 27 to May 31. All information in this message is also posted on the school website.

Senior Week was a success for our seniors. Thanks is extended to Ms. Ehmann Loyd, Ms. Batson Barber and the SCA students that planned, organized, coordinated, and worked each activity and event. I would also like to extend a thanks to all staff members that assisted in some fashion from cooking and hosting breakfast on Tuesday, grilling on Wednesday, driving the buses on Friday to monitoring students all week. We would not be able to do these things if you were not willing to above and beyond your classroom. It is great to be a Viking!! Drawings for the scavenger hunt will take place next week.

The EOY Scholarship and Awards recognition is scheduled for 5/28 at 6 PM in the ETPAC. Invitations for students that are being recognized were distributed last week. We ask that any student receiving recognition arrive about by 5:30 to check in. On 5/29, we will have the NAHS Induction Ceremony at 5:00 in the ETPAC.

The Athletic Reception is scheduled for June 7. Information has been distributed to Varsity athletes last week. The last day to purchase a ticket for the Athletic Reception is Tuesday, 6/4 in the front office. The Band Recognition is scheduled for June 10th.

Any student that did not get to pick up their pre-ordered yearbook last week or would like to purchase a yearbook, can report to Ms. Mitchell’s classroom (rm 426) before 7:10 AM or between 12:30 and 2:10 PM. The yearbook price is $90 and will be sold first come first serve.

This week we begin with Teacher- Made Assessments and final projects. We have 7 days left before EOC’s and CTE State Assessments that begin on June 6. Parents it is SO SO important for students to be at school on time for their EOC’s and CTE State Assessments. Once the testing session has begun, students are not allowed to enter the testing site. They will be required to attend Makeup Testing in the afternoon. Testing days are ½ days and students will be released when testing is over. Any student that does not have an EOC or CTE State Assessment will be assigned to a classroom and teacher during testing time and will not be allowed to change classes or move to other areas around the school.

OCS is offering an opportunity for students to improve their EOC assessment scores for Eng II, Biology, Math I and Math III for interested students that took their assessment and did not receive a proficient score during the Fall 2023 or current Spring 2024 semester. EOC Summer Remediation and retake begin 6/18 with the final retakes on 6/25. Seats are limited. Invitations will go out this week.

Credit Recovery for students will also be offered for students that are behind in credits needed for graduation. CR will begin June 17 to July 12. Letters for CR will be distributed next week and are due back by June 5th.

This is a reminder that any student that has more than 10 Unexcused absences could potentially not receive credit for that course. Please make sure all notes have been turned into the office as soon as possible.

Mark your calendar for themes and activities for Senior Week:

· Monday, 5/27: Memorial Holiday

· Tuesday, 5/28: Awards and Scholarship Recognition

· Wednesday, 5/29: The NAHS Induction Ceremony

· Thursday, 5/30:

· Friday, 5/31: Teacher-made assessments and final projects begin.

Finally, parents, I would like to begin with an announcement regarding the 2024-25 school year. In addition to the OC BOE decision for weapon detectors to be used daily, WOHS will continue with their clear backpack policy. ALL students will need to have clear backpacks and/or athletic sports bags next year. Students that do not have a clear bag will need to retrieve their items and placed the bag in a secured alternate area that will not be opened during the day until leaving the school or dismissal. Non-compliance will result in disciplinary action.

This ends our Viking message for this week. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, good-bye!
