Movie Review: Taxicab confessions with Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn in ‘Daddio’

  • By LINDSEY BAHR - AP Film Writer

Dakota Johnson gets into a cab in the new film “Daddio" and starts up a conversation with her driver that will last the duration. The driver is played by Sean Penn and though the two don't have much in common, their 101-minute chat takes on the form of a therapy session for both in the end. In her review for The Associated Press, film writer Lindsey Bahr writes that “Daddio" is ultimately a fascinating and imperfect experiment in rich lineage of modest two-handers that take on an epic scope. In theaters Friday, “Daddio” was written and directed by Christy Hall.

Feds charge 5, including man acquitted at trial, for attempting to bribe Minnesota juror with $120K

  • By MICHAEL GOLDBERG - Associated Press

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI has announced that five people, including a man acquitted at trial, have been charged for trying to bribe a juror in one of the country’s largest pandemic aid fraud cases with a bag of $120,000 in cash. Federal authorities made the announcement Wednesday. The bribe attempt brought renewed attention to the trial of seven Minnesota defendants accused of coordinating to steal more than $40 million from a federal program that was supposed to feed children during the coronavirus pandemic. Five of the defendants were convicted earlier this month. The bribe scheme disrupted the trial and sent federal authorities racing to uncover who was responsible.

Suspect in Ohio killing rearrested after jail freed him by mistake

  • AP

Authorities say a suspect in an Ohio killing has been rearrested after a jail mistakenly released him because of a typo. U.S. marshals arrested 22-year-old Amarion Sanders during a Wednesday morning traffic stop in Cleveland. The Cleveland man was mistakenly released Monday from the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center, where he was being held on $1 million bail. The jail let him go after charges were dismissed against a man in an unrelated case, and that defendant’s court case number was somehow entered incorrectly. Sanders is charged in connection with a September 2023 shooting in Cleveland and has maintained his innocence.

From DVF to Star Wars, filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy charts her own path in Hollywood

  • By LINDSEY BAHR - AP Film Writer

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s oeuvre defies simple categorization. She’s made documentaries about acid attack victims and child refugees. She’s focused her lens on the extraordinary life of designer Diane von Furstenberg. She’s spearheaded animated films for and about Pakistani children. She’s directed episodes of “Ms. Marvel” and is developing a Star Wars film. And she’s won two Oscars along the way. It’s not a conventional resume or trajectory, but for Obaid-Chinoy it’s working. And it’s made her one of the most interesting storytellers in the business. Her latest, “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge” is currently streaming on Hulu.

Antonio Conte is embracing the rebuilding task he faces at Napoli. As long as the results come quickly. Conte inherits a Napoli team that missed out on Europe last season with a 10th-place finish coming a year after the southern squad won its first Serie A title since the days when Diego Maradona played for the club. Napoli finished a whopping 41 points behind champion Inter Milan last month. Conte says “we can’t compete with the usual leaders in terms of salaries. But we can compete in terms of building a solid foundation and work ethic. Under that aspect, nobody should beat us.”

Germany moves to ease the deportation of foreigners who glorify terrorist acts

  • By GEIR MOULSON - Associated Press

The German goverment has launched new legislation to ease the deportation of foreigners who publicly approve of terrorist acts. Under the law, a single comment on social media could provide grounds for kicking people out. The Interior Ministry said Wednesday that the law on residence will be changed so that approving or promoting “a single terrorist crime” is grounds for a “particularly serious interest in expulsion.” That means that in future a single comment that “glorifies and endorses a terrorist crime on social media” could constitute a reason for expulsion. The interior minister said that liking a social media post would not be sufficient grounds for deportation.

After a failed bid to become prime minister, Croatia's president says he'll run for a second term

Croatia’s President Zoran Milanović says he plans to seek a second five-year term at a presidential election expected later this year, months after his failed bid to become the prime minister. Milanovic told reporters on Wednesday that he expects support from the center-left opposition Social Democratic Party for his candidacy. He said he's among the most experienced politicians in Croatia and “that is my trump card.” The 57-year-old Milanovic had served as prime minister in the past before running for president in the December 2019 vote. A populist-style politician, he often clashes with Croatia’s conservative Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

Top scorer Rhyne Howard is out indefinitely with an ankle injury, making it more important for veteran Tina Charles to add punch to the Atlanta Dream’s low-scoring attack as they attempt to remain in the WNBA playoff picture. U.S. national team forward Alex Morgan was left off coach Emma Hayes’ roster for the Paris Olympics. Morgan, a four-time Olympic veteran, was the most notable absence on the 18-player roster. The 34-year-old Morgan missed more than a month with the San Diego Wave after she injured her left ankle on April 19, but she had since returned. She also was named to the squad Hayes assembled for a pair of U.S. friendlies against South Korea earlier this month. Morgan has 123 goals in 224 appearances with the national team.

Gunfire, lawlessness and gang-like looters are preventing aid distribution in Gaza, an official says

  • By MENELAOS HADJICOSTIS - Associated Press

A U.S. aid official says thousands of tons of food, medicines and other aid piled up on a Gaza beach isn’t reaching those in need because of a dire security situation on the groun. He says truck drivers are either getting caught in the crossfire or have their cargo seized by “gang-like” groups. Doug Stropes, who is with the USAID, says Gaza continues to be an active combat zone that also has a “general sense of lawlessness.” Stropes said on Wednesday that since June 25, ships have delivered almost 7,000 metric tons of humanitarian assistance from Cyprus to Gaza via a U.S.-built pier linked to the territory’s coast. But only 1,000 tons have so far reached Palestinians.

Judge upholds North Carolina's anti-rioting law, dismisses civil liberties suit

  • By GARY D. ROBERTSON - Associated Press

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a civil rights group challenging North Carolina’s anti-rioting law, whose criminal penalties were raised last year by state legislators. The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina sued over the law, after the Legislature increased punishments in response to protests against racial injustice and police brutality in 2020. U.S. District Judge Loretta Biggs rejected the ACLU's arguments that the law is vague and overbroad, citing state appellate court rulings that address their concerns. The order released Wednesday can be appealed.

It also offers recommendations and solutions to health care organizations and the federal government, like a more diverse workforce and adjusting payment systems to make health care more affordable.
