Air Force Lt. Col. Roger C. Whiton, 70, of Collinsville, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at Collinsville Rehab and Health Care Center, Col- linsville, Ill.

Lt. Col. Whiton was born in Hart- ford, on May 29, 1944. He received a Bache- lor of Science Degree in biology from Tufts Uni- versity in 1966. He re- ceived his commission in the Regular Air Force from the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Program in 1966.

Through the Air Force Institute of Tech- nology, he received a Mas- ter of Science Degree in meteorology from Saint Louis University in 1977 and was awarded the Ph.D. in meteorology in 1978. Lt. Col. Whiton is a distin- guished graduate of Squad- ron Officer School.

After completing basic meterology training at San Jose University in 1967, Lt. Col. Whiton served as a weather officer and chief forecaster for Air Training undergraduate pilot training program at Moddy AFB, Ga. In 1969, Lt. Col.

Whiton served as special projects officer with the 1st Weather Group, Saigon, Republic of Vietnam. From 1970 to 1975, Lt. Col. Whiton served as radar operations officer at Headquarters AWS, where he led an upgrade of weather radar program, involving approximately 100 radar stations world- wide. Lt.

Col. Whiton helped lay the groundwork for the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEX- RAD). After completing his graduate degree program in 1978, Lt. Col. Whiton was assigned as Chief of the Environmental Sim- ulation Section, USAFE- TAC.

There he and his team developed statistical computer models to gener- ate synthetic weather observations and forecasts. The models were used for input to systems effective- ness and design tradeoff analyses for multi-million dollar national systems. In reccognition of this work, Lt. Col. Whiton and his team won Mere- wether Award.

In 1982, Lt. Col. Whiton was assigned to AFGWC as Chief of the Data Base management Branch. In that position, he spear- headed development and operational implementa- tion of an $84 million inter- active graphics and imag- ery system called the Satel- lite Data Handling System, a major breakthrough in weather forecasting tech- nology. In 1988, Lt.

Col. Whiton was assigned to Head- quarters AWS as Director of Aerospace Development and Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Aerospace Sciences. In that position, Lt. Col. Whi- ton was re- sponsible for a program under which advanced laboratory technology in the atmospheric and space sciences was transitioned into operational use in the field.

From September 1990 until now, Lt. Col Roger C. Whiton was Chief of the Aerospace Sciences Branch at the U.S. Air force Environmental Tech- nical Applications Center (USAFETAC), Scott AFB, Ill. He improved the way USAFETAC provided his- torical atmospheric and space environmental data and performed studies and analyses using that data in support of the Air Force, Army, Department of De- fense, and other govern- ment agencies.

Lt. Col. mil- itary decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Med- al, the Air Force Commen- dation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal. He was promoted to lieu- tenant colonel on April 1, 1982, with the same date of rank. He was preceded in death by his parents, War- ren and Vanya, nee Ryden, Whiton.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Whiton, nee Zinn; two daughters, Lorrie (Ryan) Acton of Maryville, and Jennifer Parker of Chesterfield, a brother, Brian Whi- ton of Granby, four grandchildren, Tiffany and Lannah Parker, and Scott and Ethan Williams; a niece, Julie Malcolm; a nephew, Matthew Whiton; and two great-nieces and a great-nephew. Louis, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Eden Village, Glen Car- bon, Ill. Joe retired from Granite City Steel in 1991, after many years of dedicated service. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus No.

1098, both in Granite City, Ill. He was also a member of the Gateway Wagoneers Square Dance Camping Club, Boot and Slippers Square Dance Club and was a former Scout Master for Troop 96. Joe enjoyed camping, trav- eling square dancing, fish- ing and John Wayne mo- vies. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. Joe will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ann, nee Becker, Rosales; and a sister, Katherine, nee Ro- sales, Hanebrink. Jack worked as a certified financial planner in Belleville, operating from 1966- 2002, and was the operator of WINU 880 AM radio in Highland, Ill. He was an avid pilot, enthusiastic tennis player at Oak Hill Tennis Club and enjoyed sailing and fishing at Carlyle Lake. She collected antiques and collectibles. She loved her grandchildren, great-grand- children, pets, and all animals. She always want- ed to look nice and made sure her hair was done, nails polished, and loved wearing her jewelry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville Jacob Rutz, whom she married Aug. 7, 1950, and who passed away Oct.

She married Ar- thur L. Bachman Jr. on July 22, 1951, in Peoria, Ill. On March 1, 1955, they moved to rural Edwards- ville, where Arthur began a career in farming while Carrie worked as a bookkeeper for France Mechanical Corporation for thirty years. Her hob- bies were sewing, collect- ing miniature lighthouses, working crossword puz- zles, and traveling with her family.

Her favorite desti- nations were the Smoky Mountains and anywhere there was a lighthouse. She will be greatly missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved hus- band of 62 years, Arthur Bachman, who died Jan- uary 24, 2013; parents, Roland and Nina Bennett; brothers, Luke and Patrick Bennett; sisters-in-law, Jean Bennett and Maryon Starkel; and Roland and Nina, nee Halliday, Ben- nett. She had been the office manager at Steffenauer Associates Columbia, for 20 years. Brenda had a deep faith, was a past church secre- tary, Sunday School teach- er and youth leader, and is a member of Hope Chris- tian Church, Columbia, Ill.

She was a member of the Avon Club for many years. Her favorite past-times were reading, crocheting, playing Scrab- ble and crossword puzzles. She and her husband, Carl, were avid Wheel of For- tune watchers.
