The National League champions will be lucky if it proves only tern porary. v. I Soroe things about baseball are difficult to and' the tremendous role this joyous Negro boy with the high-bitched voice played in th day-by-day fortunes of the Giants is one Of them. It transcended, by a great deal -the importance of his batting and fielding, good Ss they were, a from the day he stepped into the lineup just over year ago, fresh from Minneapolis, Willie became a soft of symbol to Leo Durochefs team. Here was a kid so gifted that no one could even guess at the heights he might scale, add yet so completely guileless and unaffected and filled with the wonder of playing big league ball that he scarcely seemed real.
The Giants adopted Willie, and Willie adopted the Giants. The Alabama kid became a sort of mascot, a winning symbol. The veterans of the club laughed when he ran out from under his cap on the bases and ribbed him like a bumpkin in the locker room, but when Willie wasnt around they told you he was making catches out in centerfield and throws to the plate probably never excelled, if matched, in the history of the game. Willies infectious spirit and the circus support he gave Giant pitchers were more important than the books will ever show in the clubs sensational drive to the flag in the final month. His batting fell off badly toward the end, but there likely would have been a team insurrection if Durocher had benched him.
In the final tense days Willie mourned to one of his heroes, Eddie Stanky, I ought to be hittin more, and Eddie told him, Wil-le, you just do the catching and well do the hitting. The past spring at Phoenix the Giants were a carefree, confident team, and the Holler Kid was the star of gaining sessions. But, now, anyone knows the Giants havent looked like pennant winners since Willie' went away. 37195 a new Kaiser Manhattan with the worlds safest front seat. By JOE REICHLER Associated Press Sports Writer If the Brooklyn Dodgers are not careful, they may find themselves l3Vi games in front of the New York Giants on Aug. 11. And is there anybody who doesnt know what happened to the poor Brooks after, that date last year? Even so, manager Charlie Dresden of the dauntless Dodgers is willing to gamble with such a long lead. He agrees that the Giants unprecedented 1951 rush to the top in a playoff victory over the Brooks was nothing i short of a miracle.
And miracles just dont happen twice in a row this modern day and age. Currently the Dodgers are playing a better brand of baseball than they did at a corresponding time a year ago. Theyre playing remarkable .761 ball with 35 victories in 46 games. Theyve dropped just one of their 10 games on this second western swing. They lead the second place Giants by five games.
On May 26, after losing three straight to New York, the Dodgers trailed the Giants by two and a half games. So theyve gained seven and a half games on their chief rivals in two weeks. Last nights 6-2 triumph over the Cardinals in St. Louis ran Brooklyns latest winning streak to eight in a row although only one Brooklyn pitcher Ben Wade was able to go the distance. On the other hand, node of the starting pitchers has been able to go the route against the Dodgers during that stretch.
Bostons Red Sox also solidified their first 'place hold, opening up a one-game margin over the second place New York Yankees by vanquishing the Detroit Tigers, 9-8. The Red Sox watched the Tigers twice go into the lead on home runs by former Boston sluggers Don Lenhardt and Walter Dropo, Hornsby Fired As Browns Pilot ST. LOUIS (ff) Rogers Hornsby was fired today as manager of the St. Louis Browns by Owner Bill Veeck and Marty Marion was immediately named to replace him. Veeck, in making the announcement through the Browns front office here, said he was relieving Hornsby for the good of the club.
Hornsby had a three-year contract with the Browns but Veeck made a settlement with him, the terms of which were not announced. Hornsby took over the Browns this season after managing the Seattle club to a Pacific Coast League championship last year. Veeck, who flew east Monday night because he was tired of worrying about the ball club by remote control, took the action in Boston. Veeck said today he thought he had picked the right man but he obviously bad been wrong and was admitting his mistake. He singled out no particular instance which led him to make the move.
Marion, who was dropped as manager of the St. Louis Cardinals after his first year at the helm, will take over the generalship of the Browns in tonights game with Boston. KIR. FARMER: SCHEDULE YOUR REPAIR tJORK non! Kirk Track Inplsncnt Inc. West First at City Limits 3296 PHONES 3417 Drive-In U.
