Everton confirm club are pursuing 'alternative scenarios' to 777 bid

Everton are pursuing “alternative scenarios” with regards to the club’s future ownership, according to a letter sent to the team’s fan advisory board (FAB).

777 Partners agreed to buy owner Farhard Moshiri’s 94% stake in September but there is increasing uncertainty over the takeover after the Miami-based investment firm called in restructuring experts in an attempt to save business.

The move to bring in external help means the firm’s focus now appears to be on survival, rather than adding to its portfolio of football clubs with the acquisition of the Premier League club.

Aston Villa have qualified for next season’s Champions League after Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

The result leaves Aston Villa five points clear of fifth-place Tottenham with one game remaining. It means the club will play in the Champions League for the first time since the 1982-83 season.

Villa last secured qualification for the competition, then known as the European Cup, after winning the 1982 European Cup, beating Bayern Munich in the final.

Manchester United U18s beat Chelsea to win Premier League Cup

Getty Images

Manchester United Under-18s are Premier League National champions after beating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Ethan Wheatley and Ethan Williams were enough to seal the side's second piece of silverware in as many months after beating Manchester City to win the Premier League Cup in April.

Wheatley gave United a first-half lead after he slotted the ball past Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick from close range.

Josh Acheampong got Chelsea on the scoresheet less than a minute after the start of the second half, heading home to level the game.

But Williams restored United's lead 10 minutes later, however, smashing home to score what proved to be the pivotal goal.

Adam Lawrence's side have won 24 games out of a possible 38 in all competitions in a remarkable season for United's youth system.

Manchester United’s women’s team were not told about the club’s decision to cancel the traditional end of season awards dinner until after it became public.

The Athletic reported on Sunday that United cancelled the event, scheduled for May 20, as they do not want to provide any distractions ahead of the upcoming men’s FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 25.

The club typically holds an end of season dinner at Old Trafford, where they present accolades such as the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award and recognise breakthrough young talent.

The Athletic first revealed in February that Brighton were optimistic about stretching the stay of Welbeck.

Fernandes expected to stay at Man Utd after meeting over future

Manchester United met Bruno Fernandes last week to discuss his future, with the club making clear they want him to stay and the midfielder expressing a desire to remain at Old Trafford.

Fernandes and his entourage joined members of United’s football leadership team at the team’s Carrington training ground for a lengthy conversation, during which it was underlined that the INEOS-led regime intend to continue building around its 29-year-old captain.

The Portugal international was seeking clarity on United’s direction and whether their ambition matches his — to be central to a competitive and successful side under the new sporting set-up.

Fernandes will want to see evidence that this is achievable and if he is unsatisfied or a massive offer arrives that United have a financial need to accept, his exit cannot be completely ruled out.

Brighton's Joao Pedro to return for Chelsea clash

Joao Pedro returns to the Brighton & Hove Albion attack for Chelsea's visit on Wednesday night.

The 20-goal Brazilian forward missed Saturday's 1-1 draw at Newcastle United with an ankle injury.

Valentin Barco will also be back in the squad. The Argentina international left-back was ruled out at Newcastle by concussion.

But right-back Joel Veltman is sidelined. The experienced Dutchman went off injured in the first half after scoring the opening goal at Newcastle.

Veltman has not yet been ruled out of Sunday's closing game at home to Manchester United, but fellow countryman Jan Paul van Hecke will not play against this season. The central defender has missed the last three games with a muscle injury.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi wants his team to finish strongly after taking four points against Aston Villa and Newcastle to climb back up to 10th position in the table.

The Italian said: "After Sunday we go on holiday and going on holiday without points from the last two games would be a problem for me. And we want to finish in the top ten for sure."

Hayes faces no action for 'worst decision in Women’s Champions League history' comment

Emma Hayes will face no disciplinary action from UEFA for her comments about the refereeing performance during Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final loss to Barcelona.

The Chelsea manager called Kadeisha Buchanan’s sending off in the second leg “the worst decision in UEFA Women’s Champions League history”.

Buchanan was shown a second yellow card by referee Iuliana Demetrescu after 59 minutes at Stamford Bridge as she was penalised for a foul on Patri Guijarro. The Canada defender appeared to initially win the ball before catching the back of Guijarro’s knee with her trailing leg.

Hayes also questioned the appointment of Demetrescu, stating "she’s known for easy cards".

However, UEFA has not opened a disciplinary case against Hayes.

Pochettino wants to be judged on Chelsea process, not results

Mauricio Pochettino says he wants to be judged on the process rather than his results as Chelsea head coach this season, and insists he has done “a fantastic job”.

With two Premier League matches remaining Chelsea still have a chance of finishing sixth in the table, which would yield qualification for the Europa League unless Manchester United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

In a press conference to preview Chelsea’s match against Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday, Pochettino stopped short of describing Chelsea’s season as a success but insisted they have improved over the course of the campaign in spite of persistent injuries and difficult circ*mstances.

“If you ask me, after all the circ*mstances we were living in the last 10 months, getting into Europe would be a very good thing for us,” Pochettino said.

“Are we going to judge people because of the results or because of the process, putting all the circ*mstances that we had (into it)? Those are the difficult things to judge.

"If we want to match the history of Chelsea, it's not going to be a successful season even if we win the next two games. But with all the circ*mstances, it can be a very good season.”

Beever-Jones receives first senior England call up, Millie Bright returns

Aggie Beever-Jones has received her first senior England call up and Millie Bright returns to the squad following a five-month injury absence for the Lionesses’ upcoming Euro 2025 qualifiers.

Sarina Wiegman has named a 24-player group for the fixtures against France, Republic of Ireland and Sweden plus four standby players.

Manchester United defender Maya Le Tissier, Liverpool midfielder Missy Bo Kearns, Tottenham Hotspur forward Jess Naz and Southampton goalkeeper Kayla Rendell are the players on the standby list.

Wiegman described Bright’s return to the England squad as a “great boost”, with her and Williamson available to resume their centre-back partnership for the first time since February 2023.

“Absolutely it seems like a long time,” Wiegman said. “I’m very happy and so is she (Bright), and it’s very good for the team.

“It’s a great boost. Of course we all hoped she would be back earlier, but she just needed some more time. I’m just really happy now this is the moment she can come back.”

Martinez set to return to Man Utd's squad vs Newcastle

Lisandro Martinez is set to return to Manchester United's squad for their Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old has not featured since United’s 1-1 draw at Brentford in March due to a calf strain. The defender has been limited to just 11 appearances in all competitions due to a number of injuries throughout the season.

He endured nearly four months on the sidelines after sustaining a foot injury in September. Then, just four games into his comeback, he suffered a knee injury during a 3-0 victory against West Ham United.

Ten Hag also confirmed that Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will need to be assessed to determine their availability for the game at Old Trafford.

He said: "Licha Martinez, I think he will return to the squad. He's had some sessions with us. Everything is going right in the training. For some other players we have to see — Rashford, Bruno, Willy Kambwala — if they'll be fit enough."

Ten Hag also provided an update on the fitness of United defender Raphael Varane.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the former France international would be leaving United at the end of the season.

He joined the Premier League club from Real Madrid three years ago and has gone on to make 93 appearances, scoring two goals.

"We are planning (with Varane), definitely," Ten Hag added. "Not tomorrow but we hope for Sunday (against Brighton) and for the last game (FA Cup final against Manchester City)."

Emirates to be primary home for Arsenal Women next season

Premier League news live (121)

Arsenal have announced that the Emirates Stadium will be the primary home ground for the women’s team next season.

The club intend to host 11 matches at the Emirates — eight of their 11 Women’s Super League (WSL) home fixtures and three Champions League games.

Depending on progress in Europe’s elite competition, it would also mean all home legs in the knockout rounds would be played in the stadium.

The remaining cup fixtures in the FA Cup and League Cup will be played at Meadow Park.

Arsenal’s home matches have historically been held at Meadow Park, home of National League side Boreham Wood, but they have gradually increased the number of WSL fixtures held at the Emirates season on season.

There has been an average crowd of 52,029 across six WSL matches and an 11 per cent increase in average attendances at the Emirates compared to last season, including two sell-out games against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur and three attendance records.

"We’ve recently seen extraordinary growth in supporters coming to Emirates Stadium for games held here, which include two complete sell-outs this season," Arsenal's outgoing chief executive, Vinai Venkatesham, said.

“The next step in our journey is to make Emirates Stadium our main home for Arsenal Women. We’re looking forward to giving more supporters the chance to watch our women’s team play."
