Policy hunt: You can search for regulated firms past and present on the FSA Register
Lee Smythe, managing director of chartered financial planner Smythe & Walter in Faversham, Kent, replies: When insurance companies merge, names are often lost.
United Friendly policies now come under Royal London Plus, which looks after policies taken out with Royal London, United Friendly and Refuge Assurance. Phone 0845 050 2020.
When tracking down contact details for old policies, one option is to try the Financial Services Authority Register at fsa.gov.uk where you can search for the name of regulated firms past or present.
