DAYTON DAILY NEWS MOTOR SPORTS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY, 1999 7D DAYTONA NOTES altes n't race in todaY's ARCA event wo 1 1f nripi Baltes, who had turned the best lap of the practice session at 190.206 mph after qualifying sixth-fastest at 186.761 in Thursday's blustery conditions. "We made a couple mistakes in qualifying (in setting up the car), or we would have been on the pole. We were FROM WIRE REPORTS i DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. Even his styliSfi Hilfiger sunglasses couldn't hide the hurt in Josh Baltes' eyes. Today's ARCA FirstPlus Financial 200 at Daytona International Speedway was supposed to be the race that would take his budding career to another level, the one that would demonstrate to competitors and sponsors alike that the 24-year-old Dayton native has a future in the sport, jie calls his lifelong passion.
Instead, his No. 18 Chevrolet Monte Carlo sat on jackstands in a desolate corner of the garage area Saturday, its right side a crumpled mass of steel after a blown'right front tire in morning practice sent him hurtling into the wall at 190 mph. And with it, Baltes wondered if hisj creams had crumbled. It was our race to lose, really," said will serve as a primer for next Sunday's big race, the Daytona 500, the inaugural event of NASCAR's 51st season, a gruel- ing campaign that has been expanded to 34 races. "Everybody knows you've got to drive hard and you have to take some chanc- es," said Rusty Wallace, winner of last year's Shootout who got the pole position in a random drawing Thursday.
"Track position in NASCAR Winston Cup racing is real important, and any- time you can start up front it has got to be good." The Bud Shootout field consists of 14 Busch Pole winners and a 15th driver, the winner of a 25-lap qualifying race. Geoff Bodine, who will pilot a car fielded by Joe Bessey a Busch Grand National driver from Scarborough, Maine, drew the pole position for the Bud Shootout Qualifier. Baltes' father, Terry, a Dayton commercial real estate broker, has pumped close to $1 million into his son's career since they entered ARCA in 1997, and admits he has just about reached his financial limit. A whopping $200,000 of that was spent preparing for today's race, with the feeling that a victory on national television in ARCA's premier event would land the team a big-buck sponsor. The elder Baltes enlisted Tom Sokolowski, who guided Tim Steele to two of his three series titles, as crew chief and helped establish Northern Motorsports, based out of Mooresville, N.C.
But a strong run today was crucial. "We had all of our bullets in one gun," the elder Baltes said. Saturday, his son felt like he had just shot himself in the foot through no fault of his own. "No warning sign, nothing," Baltes said as he stood beside his disabled car, one that Terry Labonte once drove on the Winston Cup circuit. "With these radial tires, there's no warning.
In the long run, they're safer, because you run the inner liner. But the down side is, you don't know when they're going to go. "When the right front blows, nobody can steer out of it. At least, I haven't seen anyone. You're just along for the ride." Bud Shootout today: Fifteen NASCAR Winston Cup drivers will kick off SpeedWeeks '99 when they heed that famous command and flip the ignition switches of their stock cars for today's Bud Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
The 25-lap dash for cash among the 1998 Busch Pole Award winners vying for a total purse of $512,500, with about $108,000 earmarked for the winner Josh Baltes fastest in two of the three sessions I guess three out of four, counting today. "It's unfortunate, because I don't know if we're going to make it to Atlanta (for the next race on March 12). We were hoping for a good showing here to attract a sponsor. With tearing up this car, we're out of money. It's just a shame." NASCAR WINSTON CUP New rules could be in effect Feb.

"This team worked really hard as well as everybody at Roush Racing on our restrictor-plate program. That is by far the best we have run all winter," Burton said. Streaking: Terry Labonte carries a streak of five consecutive top-10 finishes into the season, a number surpassed only by Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon (20). NASCAR told teams testing at Rockingham last week to test both sets of rules. said NASCAR would the teams' test results in its final decision.

Rounding out the top 10 qualifiers were Ken Schrader, Mike Skinner, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Ernie Irvan, Michael Waltrip and defending champion Dale Earnhardt, which means all are virtually assured of making the 43-car field. Among those much farther back were expected contenders Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte, who clocked in 18th and 19th, respectively.
rings as Eldora and Winchester. "I couldn't believe it." They are the only two drivers guaranteed their starting spot in stock car racing's richest event, with the remainder of the field determined by a combination of Thursday's Twin 125 qualifying races, qualifying times and provisional berths. The Bud Shootout for 1998 Winston Cup pole-winners takes center stage at Daytona International Speedway today, along with the ARCA FirstPlus Financial 200. Stewart who started from the pole in the Indianapolis 500 in his first visit there in 1996 thought a crew member was playing a cruel joke when he radioed him that he had turned a 46.2-second lap, which was good enough for the pole until Gordon bumped him. "He's kind of the class clown, and he said it without any emotion," he said.
"Then I looked up in MOTOR SPORTS SCHEDULE David Poole THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER -(-) DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -NASCAR Winston Cup director Gary'Nelson said Friday NASCAR is "days away" from a decision on whether to imple-ment'new air-dam and spoiler-sief ules beginning Feb. 21 at Rockingham, N.C. The changes, which give all car makes the same air-dam clearance and change the spoiler size in nonrestrictor-plate racesl were used in November's race at Atlanta as a test. Nelson said most teams gave NASCAR positive feedback.

When we were at Talladega the last time, you saw the same things happen. It just keeps getting taken to the next level each time. "I knew that I had to get the momentum up and that the second lap was the one we werB'Shooting for. I even heard the time -on the first lap and was a little worried.
"But once I brought it down to the bot- "tom of the race track for the second lap and ran the shortest way around, I could see the RPMs and it looked like it was going to be a good lap, but I didn't know if it was going to be good enough for the NASCAR WINSTON CUP Feb. .14 Daytona 500, Daytona Beach.
