OF THUNDER. THANKS, DALENCIA. WELL, IF YOU TRAVEL THE BELTWAY OVERNIGHT, GET READY SOME BIG CHANGES ARE COMING BECAUSE STARTING TOMORROW NIGHT, ROAD WORK BEGINS ON THE NEW 695 PROJECT. AND JOINING US LIVE THIS MORNING WITH MORE IS STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATOR WILL PINES. THANKS FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. YES. GOOD MORNING JEN. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. YOU ARE SO WELCOME. SO TELL US WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. THIS IS FROM 70 TO 83. IS THAT RIGHT. THAT’S CORRECT. UH, STARTING ON TOMORROW NIGHT AND TYPICALLY RUNNING SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAYS, WEATHER PERMITTING, WE’LL START TO HAVE OVERNIGHT LANE CLOSURES AS PART OF STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION’S 17 MILE LONG PROJECT ON 695. IS THIS BOTH THE INNER LOOP AND THE OUTER LOOP? THAT’S CORRECT. THE WORK WILL START WHERE THE CONTRACTOR WILL BEGIN ON THE INNER LOOP, STARTING AROUND THAT I-70 POINT AND WORKING THEIR WAY NORTH UP TO I 83. ONCE THEY FINISH THE WORK ON THE INNER LOOP SIDE, THEY’LL HOP OVER TO THE OUTER LOOP AND START TO WORK THEIR WAY BACK DOWN, AND YOU’RE GOING TO BE DOING SOME STAGGERED CLOSURES OVERNIGHT. IS THAT RIGHT? THAT’S RIGHT. WE WILL BEGIN WITH SINGLE LANE CLOSURES AND BUILD THEM OUT OVER THE EVENING. UH, TO WHEREBY 11 P.M. WILL BE IN A TRIPLE LANE CLOSURE CONFIGURATION. AND THEN EACH MORNING WE’LL HAVE THAT REOPENED BY THE 5 A.M. START OF THE PEAK HOUR. SO WHEN YOU SAY TRIPLE LANE CLOSURES, THAT’S BASICALLY GOING TO TAKE IT DOWN TO ONE LANE. THAT’S CORRECT. YEAH. SO WE WANT TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THOSE TRIPLE LANE CLOSURES TO MAKE SURE THAT MOTORISTS TRY TO AVOID THIS AREA ENTIRELY. WHILE THIS CRITICAL WORK IS ONGOING. YEAH. THAT’S A BIG DEAL BECAUSE FOR THE FEEDER ROUTES AND THAT’S GOING TO IMPACT YOU ON 795 WHEN YOU’RE COMING DOWN TO TAKE THE INNER LOOP. ALSO 70 IF YOU’RE HEADING THEN TOWARD TOWSON. SURE. REALLY. WE REALLY HOPE THAT, UH, ALL MOTORISTS WILL PLAN AHEAD. WE HAVE ON OUR CHART WEB PAGE, DETAILED TRAFFIC INFORMATION. SO STAY TUNED AND I’LL OBVIOUSLY WATCH YOUR, UH, YOUR SHOWS TO STAY CURRENT ON TRAFFIC INFORMATION. BUT ALSO WE ASK THAT MOTORISTS WILL TRY TO USE, UH, ALTERNATIVE ROUTES LIKE EIGHT, 95 AND 95. WHILE THIS WORK IS OCCURRING AT NIGHT. ALL RIGHT. WE NEED TO HAVE YOU BACK INTO BECAUSE YOU HAVE OTHER THINGS GOING ON ON 95 NEAR 895 AS WELL, WITH SOME SOME BRIDGE WORK THAT’S GOING TO GO ON. THAT’S RIGHT. UH, ALSO DURING THAT PERIOD. BUT SOUTH OF THE BELTWAY, UM, RIGHT NEAR THE I 95 AND 695 INTERCHANGE, THAT AREA WILL HAVE, UH, OUR PROJECT FOR THE TEN BRIDGES REHABILITATION WORK ONGOING, WHICH WILL ALSO, UH, THROUGH THAT SAME PERIOD STARTING ON JULY 21ST, WE’LL HAVE TRIPLE LANE CLOSURES AS WELL IN THE EVENINGS. OH, SO THAT’S THAT’S JUST NEXT WEEKEND. THAT’S CORRECT. THAT’S FAST. OKAY. ALL RIGHT. SO SO BE AWARE WE CAN’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU. THIS IS COMING. THAT’S RIGHT. WE AND WE THANK ALL OF THE MOTORISTS FOR THEIR PATIENCE. AND JUST PLEASE PLAN AHEAD. ALL RIGHT. SOUNDS GOOD. YOU’RE SPEAKING RIGHT TO THE PEOPLE THAT IT MATTERS TO. THAT’S FOR SURE TOO. THANK YOU. SO MUCH

Starting Sunday night, crews will start to close travel lanes on parts of the beltway between Woodlawn and Towson.

Why?

Crews will re-stripe and shift the travel lanes on the Beltway so that crews can begin work on what's known as the Interstate 695 Transportation Systems Management and Operations project, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.

When complete, the project will convert the existing median shoulder into a rush-hour travel lane. The project is intended to improve reliability and reduce congestion on the heavily traveled portion of the Beltway between the Interstate 70 and White Marsh Boulevard exits.

As such, the travel lanes will be re-striped to move traffic to the right, which will allow crews to work in the center median area.

So, here's the deal

Crews will close lanes starting Sunday night on the Inner Loop as follows.

  • 8 p.m. — single-lane closure
  • 10 p.m. — double-lane closure
  • 11 p.m. — triple-lane closure

This is not a one-night thing. The mobile work starts Sunday night on the Inner Loop and will take approximately two weeks to complete the entire scope from I-70 to Interstate 83.

Once that's done on the Inner Loop, crews will do the same on the Outer Loop from I-83 back to I-70. The SHA said the complete traffic shift, in both directions of the beltway, is expected to be complete by mid-August, weather permitting.

The work will take place Sundays through Thursdays and all lanes will reopen no later than 5 a.m. each morning.

Variable speed limits will be in effect, during which time, the speed limit could change from 55 mph to 45 mph. Be sure to monitor posted signage, and be aware that speed cameras could be in use along this portion of the construction.

But that's not all

Work continues in the Halethorpe\Arbutus area on the 10 Bridges Project, where crews are rehabilitating and preserving 10 bridges that comprise the Beltway interchange with Interstate 95. This construction work continues through 2026 with overnight lane closures.

Overnight closures coming to busy I-695 corridor starting in July
