Day 7Maras & Moray Tour

After breakfast, you will embark on a tour of Maras & Moray. Upon arrival at Moray, your knowledgeable guide will lead you through the remarkable three-tiered terraces resembling amphitheatres. These ingeniously carved circular structures form a bowl-like shape and are believed to have served as experimental agricultural laboratories for the Incas. Witnessing this breathtaking sight offers profound insight into the ingenuity of the Inca Empire.

The journey continues to Maras, a mere two miles away. Here, prepare to be awe-struck by the mesmerising salt evaporation ponds, utilised by both the Incas and potentially even earlier civilisations. Carved into the mountainside are over 3,000 salt pools, capturing briny water emerging from a natural spring. Through a communal process, the water slowly evaporates, leaving behind pure salt crystals. The scene of these ponds, resembling a blanket of snow or ice, is truly captivating.

Among the most famous products derived from this salt is ‘Sal de Maras’, renowned for its distinctive pink hue. You’ll stop in Maras for lunch at UNU Restaurante known for highlighting locally sourced produce for a farm-to-plate experience.

Day 9Temple of the Sun to Aguas Calientes, aboard Vistadome Train Observatory

At approximately 08:00, you will be collected and transferred to the wonderful Inca town and archaeological site of Ollantaytambo. It was the royal estate of the Inca emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and built the town and a ceremonial centre. You will spend about an hour exploring these magnificent ruins, visiting the Temple of the Sun, and seeing massive blocks of rock that have been perfectly carved and polished by master Inca stonemasons. Ollantaytambo is also a fine example of Inca agricultural construction and hydro-engineering, with a complex series of stone water fountains, channels and agricultural terraces, the latter organised by elevation to create different microclimates for crop experimentation. Walking to the town square, you will have great views of the ruins above us, as well as Inca granaries and store houses built on the sides of the surrounding mountains, here we stop at the Apu Veronica restaurant for lunch.

Afterwards, head to the train station and board the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo). Vistadome Peru offers an unforgettable two-hour train journey through some of Peru's most stunning landscapes, you'll be treated to large panoramic windows that immerse you in the breathtaking scenery of the Peruvian Andes and the Sacred Valley. In addition to the spectacular views, passengers can also enjoy onboard entertainment and refreshments, including traditional Peruvian snacks and beverages. Once arrived in Aguas Calientes, you’ll be met by a guide who will transfer you to the hotel where you can enjoy the afternoon at your own leisure.

Sitting in a deep gorge at the foot of the mountain that Machu Picchu sits on, Aguas Calientes blends traditional life with tourist infrastructure boasting many markets, shops and restaurants. The town is largely pedestrianised, making it an easy place to explore on foot. Aguas Calientes owes its name to the natural hot springs that envelop the area, inviting visitors to indulge in a soothing soak amidst the steamy waters. We suggest taking the afternoon to explore before enjoying an included dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.

This evening's accommodation is a unique luxury eco-lodge situated on 12 acres featuring terraced hills, waterfalls and stone pathways tucked away in a lush, tropical cloud forest. The Historic Sanctuary is a haven for natural beauty and hosts 214 bird species, such as the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean co*ck-of-the-rock as well as the world's largest native orchid collection (372 species).

Day 11Explore Cusco on a City Tour & Andean Cooking Class

This morning you will be met at approximately 10:00 and transferred to the house of your professional local chef. Your gastronomic journey begins as you learn of the local, organic products grown in the traditional communities in and around Cusco. Once you’ve prepared and cooked your traditional Andean meal, it will be time for lunch with the chef and his family - an excellent opportunity for cultural immersion. The group will gather in the chef’s dining room and they will divulge stories and experiences from their time working with Peruvian cuisine. And, of course, you’ll get to taste the meal you’ve just prepared. For Peruvians, this chance to gather around the dining room to share their cuisine with others is more than just eating. It’s a chance to share their lives, their knowledge, traditions and home life with other people -- and, of course, to have fun. When the meal is over, we’ll say thanks and goodbye to the chef and his family and then we’ll take you to explore the city and its beautiful churches.

Head to the wonderful Koricancha, next to the Church of Santo Domingo. According to chroniclers writing during the period immediately after the Spanish conquest, the Koricancha was the most sacred and important temple of the Inca Empire. Its walls were covered in gold, and life-size statues of plants and animals, all made of pure gold and silver, decorated its rooms and corridors. Unfortunately, this wealth was stripped away by the Spanish conquistadors.

Then visit the Cathedral of Cusco, located in the Plaza de Armas. Built between 1560 and 1654 on the foundations of an existing Inca temple, this spectacular cathedral houses many works of art from the Cusco school of painters, and its high altar and pulpit are covered in gold and silver reliefs. The next stop is the imposing Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, which stands on a hill above Cusco. Here you will see some of the best examples of Inca stonework and construction, including huge rocks that were carefully cut and fitted perfectly to form the walls. After the city tour you will be returned to the hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 14Floating islands of the Uros people, Lake Titicaca

The full-day trip begins around 07:00, when you head to the port and board our comfortable speed boat to the island of Taquile. Taquile is one of the most beautiful islands in Peru, where the traditional way of life is still very much alive. You'll meet some of the master weavers of this ancient Andean community, whose textiles are considered among the best in the country. According to legend, the Incas themselves learned how to weave from the artisans of this island. In Taquile, the men are the weavers, and the women spin the yarn. Following your visit to the skilled weavers and the enchanting island, you will journey to the quaint port on Taquile around midday. From there, set sail towards the Chucuito Peninsula, nestled within the Aymara region of Lake Titicaca.

This area symbolises the collective heritage of the Peruvian-Bolivian altiplano community. Visit the small and rarely-visited rural community of Luquina, where you will enjoy a wonderful buffet lunch at the local fisherman’s house. Later in the afternoon, as we begin heading back towards Puno, on your way visit the amazing Floating Islands of the Uros people.

Upon arrival at the floating islands, you’ll probably be amazed by the scale of these floating reed constructions. The Uros originally built these islands for defensive reasons: if a threat appeared, they could move their island homes to a safer location. The islands are made from totora reeds that grow around the lake, and each island is in a constant state of reconstruction, as old reeds are replaced by new ones. Stepping onto the islands is quite an experience, as the springy reed floor feels strange beneath your feet. We’ll explore the main island, and see the houses, watchtowers and other structures, all built of reeds. One of the locals will then give a brief presentation about how the islands are made, and then you can meet one of the local families to see how they live.

After visiting the Uros islands, head back to Puno, where you can enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure soaking in the stunning views.

Please note: As this morning is an early departure, a pre-packaged breakfast box will be available.

Overnight: Titilaka - Relais & Châteaux, Lake Titicaca

Meals included: Breakfast; Lunch

Day 15Puno to the Colca Valley

This morning depart around 06:00 and head toward Chivay Village, a picturesque Andean town nestled in the heart of the Colca Valley, one of Peru’s most scenic destinations. The trip is approximately 6 hours and will encompass stops along the way. Heading to an area called “Lagunillas’ where, if luck is on your side, you may catch glimpses of flamingos, Andean birds and ducks.

Continuing the drive, cross 'Tocra', a high plain situated at over 4,500 meters above sea level. Here you have the chance to observe lakes teeming with migrant birds and admire images of the Andean plateau looking out for llamas and guanacos. Ascend to the highest point of the tour, 'Pata Pampa' (Pata meaning high, and Pampa referring to land), reaching an elevation of 4,820 meters. From this vantage point, we'll marvel at the awe-inspiring vistas of volcanoes such as Ampato, Sabancaya, Hualca-Hualca, the source of the Amazon River - Mismi, and the majestic Cordillera de Chila (Chila Ranges).

Approaching the town of Chivay (3,651 meters), we'll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the multicoloured terraces of the Colca Valley. Our journey will then lead us to Coporaque town, where you will visit Lodge La Casa de Mamayacchi for lunch (not included in the program cost). Meals included: Breakfast

Day 16Colca Valley to Arequipa

Today you have another early start as you head to a lookout known as Cruz del Condor (Cross of the Condor) near the small village of Maca and Cabanaconde. Here strong winds rise from the canyon, providing a favourite spot for Andean condors. They soar on the thermals, often in pairs, typically either early in the morning or in the late afternoon. There’s a good chance you’ll see these huge condors, with their three-meter wingspans, flying very close to the lookout point, providing a truly majestic sight. From the lookout point, you’ll also have incredible views down into the depths of Colca Canyon.

Heading back to Chivay, stop at the traditional village of Pinchollo and the Antahuilque viewpoint. This viewpoint (or mirador, as they are known in Spanish) offers wonderful views of the 1,500-year-old agricultural terraces that curve along the hillsides like an amphitheatre. You can also spot some of the enchanting lagoons of the Colca Valley.

Next is the lookout point of Choquetico, where you can see two very interesting features. First are the hanging tombs, or tumbas colgantes, built by the Aymara-speaking Collaguas around 1200 AD. These funerary niches were cut into the cliffs of Cerro Cabanaconde and then sealed off with rock walls. In order to reach these otherwise inaccessible cliff faces, the builders likely worked their way down using ropes suspended from trees up above. The second interesting feature we can see here is the litomaqueta, a model of the canyon terraces carved into a rock.

Moving on, visit the small Andean village of Maca, which sits on the lower slopes of Sabancaya Volcano and Nevado Hualca Hualca. Then pay a visit to the village of Yanque, which is home to a pretty white church, a small archaeology museum and thermal baths down by the river. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are horse-riding facilities and mountain-bike rentals available in Yanque. Around 1pm start our drive to Arequipa with an expected arrival time of 15:30.

Upon arrival in Arequipa you’ll check in to your accommodation located in the historic centre of Arequipa, in a UNESCO protected site, this former monastery dates back to the year 1540 when the city was founded. CIRQA is an exquisite boutique hotel that seamlessly blends colonial charm with contemporary luxury.

Yanahuara was built in the 19th century and stands next to the beautiful Iglesia de San Juan de Yanahuara, a baroque church built in 1750. Engraved in the Yanahuara sillar stone are the names of notable people who have lived in Arequipa for the past few years. two hundred years.

After exploring the Plaza de Armas and the surrounding streets, head to Arequipa’s most famous attraction: the 16th-century Monasterio de Santa Catalina, which opened to the public in 1970 after nearly 400 years as a cloister. For a nun to enter the monastery, she first had to prove her Spanish origin and pay a dowry of at least 1,000 gold pesos. Once inside, they were virtually cut off from the world inside the sprawling monastery, which is like a small town unto itself, with narrow streets, gardens, and different sections for sleeping, cooking and praying. The monastery covers an entire city block, and exploring its quaint alleyways and rooms is quite an experience.

When the restoration of the Monastery began, before its opening to the public, a large collection of mainly religious paintings was found, some dating from the Viceroyalty of Peru. Some 400 works were restored, revealing influences from the Italian and Spanish schools of art as well as excellent examples of the Cusqueña School. The most important paintings are exhibited in two large rooms inside the monastery, with high ribbed vaults, from which the plaster has been removed to expose the Sillar walls.

The Andean Sanctuaries Museum is located one block from the Plaza de Armas. The museum houses a 550-year-old Inca sacrifice, discovered at the top of Mountain Ampato in 1995, the remains mummified by aridity and cold. Dressed in finely crafted ceremonial robes and surrounded by spiritually significant objects, this victim turned out to be a 12-year-old girl who was sacrificed to the gods in the 1450s. Archaeologists nicknamed Juanita the Ice Maiden. Juanita is now the centrepiece of the excellent Museo Santuarios Andinos, her mummified remains eerily preserved in a climate-controlled display case. The museum’s atmospheric rooms house many other artifacts discovered during the expedition that found Juanita, including more than 300 Inca relics, including textiles, ceramics, and gold, silver, and copper statues. Finally, after appreciating this beautiful city return to your hotel.

Other important information

TOUR GUIDE VS. TOUR LEADER
Tour Guide:
Often locals with intimate knowledge of an area, its culture, and history. Their role entails providing commentary, routing the tour, and seeing that people have a good time. They are a licensed, qualified expert who supplies specific information on the history, art, architecture and culture of the city/village/attraction where they are guiding the tour. The guide meets the group at the required place and leaves it at the end of the tour; they do not travel with the group.

Tour Leader:
An experienced person tasked with ensuring the smooth operation of tours, as well as providing practical support to passengers throughout the whole trip. Their role primarily includes assisting with accommodation, transportation between locations, and communication with tour guides at each stop. A tour leader may provide general guidance around a city or village and offer information on the place visited on the bus. However, they are not required to have specific art, architecture, or historical knowledge. They are not allowed to provide a guided tour or commentary of a city/village/attraction once there and, if caught doing so, can be fined.

Please note: Tour leaders/guides are not a standard inclusion in all travel offers. Tour leaders/guides will only be made available when required to enhance the experience of the destination featured.

CLIMATE & AVERAGE TEMPERATURES
Lima
Lima is usually described as mild and warm throughout the year without much noteworthy rain, making Lima one of the driest capitals in the world. The average temperatures range from 18°C to 28°C.

Cusco
Cusco, located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, has a highland climate with distinct dry and wet seasons. The city's elevation, approximately 3,400 meters (11,200 feet) above sea level, contributes to its cooler temperatures.

Dry Season (May to October)

: This period is considered winter in Cusco and is characterized by dry and sunny weather. Days are generally clear, and temperatures can range from around 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F). However, nights can be quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to around 0°C (32°F).

Wet Season (November to April)

: Cusco's wet season coincides with the summer months. During this time, there is a higher chance of rainfall, and the weather can be more unpredictable. Daytime temperatures are still mild, ranging from 12°C to 18°C (54°F to 64°F), but nights are relatively milder compared to the dry season. It's important to note that due to its high altitude, Cusco's weather can vary significantly throughout the day. Visitors are advised to bring layers, including warm clothing for cooler evenings and mornings, as well as sun protection for the strong mountain sun during the day.

Puno
As Puno is located at such a high elevation (3830m above sea level), it experiences more extreme weather conditions than would be expected for its tropical latitude. The average annual temperature is about 8.4°C, and the weather never gets overly warm. During the winter months from June to August, night-time temperatures usually drops well below 0°C. At this high altitude, the rays of the sun are very strong. Most of the annual precipitation falls during the southern hemisphere summer, with the winter months being very dry.

FLIGHTS
Seat Selection & Frequent Flyer Points:
We do not arrange seat selection. It is essential to highlight that some airlines do not allow pre-selected seats. We strongly suggest you contact the airline directly with seating allocation requirements and/or arrive at the airport earlier to arrange your seating. While we do not add frequent flyer member details to bookings, you can do this directly with the airline once you have your flight information.

Passport Validity:
Customers must provide valid passport details either at the time of purchase or no later than 45 days before the departure date. Failure to do so may result in the cancellation of the booking. Customers will be responsible for any costs and fees incurred in this instance.

COACH TOUR
Meals
For meals not included, the tour leader (when available) will offer assistance with reservations, suggestions and directions to local restaurants. It is your responsibility to notify us of any dietary requests/requirements. Please note: We will do our best to meet your requests/requirements; however, we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to.

Luggage
You will be responsible for all your personal belongings whilst on tour. You must carry your own luggage from the vehicle to the hotel room and back to the vehicle. The driver will assist with the uploading and unloading of bags from the vehicle.

Please note: Due to luggage and space limitations on the boats during your stay at the Amazon, you will only be allowed to bring a small bag with your essentials. It is highly recommended to pre-pack a smaller bag with just the essentials needed for this portion of your trip to the Amazon. The remainder of your luggage will be kept securely at port in Puerto Maldonado at no additional cost.

Please note: For your overnight stay in Aguas Calientes, due to luggage and space limitations on the train, you will only be allowed to bring an overnight bag to Machu Picchu. It is highly recommended to pre-pack a smaller bag with just the essentials needed for this overnight stay. The remainder of your luggage will be transferred to the hotel in Cusco at no additional cost.

OTHER
Mobility:
If you require wheelchair access please contact our friendly sales and service team to inquire on your behalf. Please note, any mobility requests are subject to availability and dependant on the airlines and accommodation.

Fitness Level Required:
A leisurely level of fitness will be required.
Leisurely is described as light walking, including up multiple stairs, and occasional hiking, may involve uneven surfaces. Able to travel unassisted and get on and off vehicles and small boats. Suitable for most fitness levels and mobility. For the Rainbow Mountain optional tour, the fitness level required is active/demanding. Active and demanding as described as the following:
• Active: Some high-altitude trekking, off-road biking or high-grade kayaking. More strenuous activities, suitable for a good fitness level and for guests who exercise regularly. More fast-paced activities and walking on uneven surfaces.
• Demanding: A high fitness level is required to undertake these activities, which may include high-altitude trekking for anywhere between four to seven hours per day for an extended number of days. Recommended for active travellers with some previous trekking experience.
Please note: If you have any concerns, please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel.

High Altitude Illness
Altitude illness occurs when there is a lack of oxygen in the air at high altitudes. Altitude illness will affect some travellers, with no apparent regard to age, gender or physical condition. If you have any concerns please consult your healthcare provider prior to purchase/travel. It is generally recommended to take the time to acclimatize properly, which is why you’ll have a few days before and after your trek to properly acclimatize.

Please note: Inoculations may be required to enter the country visited, along with re-entry into Australia after your visit. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up to date medical travel information well before departure.

Yellow Fever
A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate. It's also common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate upon arrival. You must check with your doctor well before leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting.

Gratuities / Tipping:

Land

Gratuities (tips) are not included for the services of the tour leader (when available) and driver throughout the tour. The recommended tip is $10-20 AUD per person per day. This covers the guide/leader and the driver and will be collected on tour.

Please note: Tipping for services provided is always a matter of personal discretion; however, please be aware that many locals consider tipping part of their normal remuneration, and they may approach you for payment; there's no need to be intimidated by the request.

Sightseeing:
Please note: If entry to a site is affected by changes in operating hours or public holiday closures, your itinerary, where possible, may be adjusted, or a similar activity will be offered in its place (subject to availability).

Shopping:
Shopping overseas can be a daunting and confusing experience, especially when there is a language barrier. Please be very cautious when foreign currencies and prices are involved. If paying by credit card, please pay close attention to the amount you are being charged and keep all your receipts.
Do not make any purchases you are not comfortable with or feel pressured into. If you are uncertain or need assistance with the language barrier, please seek assistance from your Tour Guide/Leader.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions regarding shopping for further information.

Visas

Peru
A tourist visa for Peru is not required if travelling on an Australian Passport.

Chile (Stopover & Transit)
Australian passport holders visiting Chile for tourism purposes must apply for a single or multiple tourist visas. Visas must be lodged through the SAC CIUDADANOS portal only.
If your travel includes transiting through Chile, you should contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Chile to confirm if you'll need a visa.
If you transit in Chile without a visa and miss your connecting flight, you won’t be able to pass the immigration point. You'll be required to remain airside and not leave the airport until a new onward flight has been arranged. Australians have previously been required to remain airside for several days due to missed flight connections.

United States (Transiting)
If travelling on an Australian passport, an ESTA (visa waiver) for the USA is a strict requirement when travelling to or flying through the USA. Once a USA ESTA visa waiver is issued it is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner) and will allow multiple entries into the USA. For information on ESTA eligibility or to apply, please visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

Please note: Due to recent changes to USA immigration policies, TripADeal recommends all travellers visit US Customs & Border Protection.

Important:
• Please start arranging your visa three weeks before departure to account for any delays due to consulate operating hours.
• Visa rules may have changed since Covid-19. Some countries and airlines may require you to obtain an additional visa before arrival. Please check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering.
Please note:
• It is your responsibility to be travel-ready and ensure that you are aware and comply with any destination or travel requirements, including the validity of all required travel documents.
• Passengers who are not Australian citizens must also check with the respective consulate or visa agency to determine what their visa requirements are and what personal identification is required.
• It is also important to note that some areas of employment, such as journalism, government authorities and charity organisations, may have additional restrictions in applying for visas. This may, in turn, affect the type of application required.

Travel insurance

Embarking on your next trip is exciting, and while you hope the unexpected does not happen, it is best to be prepared. We strongly recommend you take out travel insurance when making your booking. Whether it’s a potential medical emergency, a flight cancellation, a delayed suitcase, or an unforeseen event, it's important to ensure you're adequately protected. For more information or advice visit https://www.tripadeal.com.au/travel-insurance
